Research:
Center personnel and collaborators investigate topics germane to the conservation
and management of herpetofauna. This research includes basic ecological
and behavioral studies, as well as applied studies, addressing issues
such as habitat restoration methods. Some of the topics investigated include:
- Ecological and behavioral studies
- Herpetofaunal biodiversity surveys
- Generation of habitat restoration plans
- Analysis of wetland health
- GIS (Geographic Information Systems) site characterizations
- GIS habitat suitability modeling
Education:
The Center will provide educational opportunities for traditional and
returning students, as well as for continuing education. Opportunities
have included:
- Graduate student research
- Undergraduate student research experiences
- Continuing education for individuals such as science teachers
- On-site training experiences for land managers
Training provided through the Center may be for credit or noncredit.
Individuals participating in more extensive activities may receive certification
on completion of training.
Outreach:
The Center is a resource for topics in herpetology, land management, and
other related areas. Information can be provided in a variety of formats,
including:
- Formal presentations at professional meetings
- Conferences at IPFW or sponsored by the Center focusing on herpetofaunal
conservation and management
- Web pages about endangered and other native species, and guidelines
for habitat management for herps
- Brochures and other printed documentation
- Informal visits to schools and environmental groups
Although the Herp Center is an institution of IPFW, it is largely funded
by support external to that provided by the university. Efforts to conduct
novel research, or to develop new materials for educational purposes,
will generally need to be financially supported by the party requesting
them.
