Identification

The crowned snake is buff colored to light brown. The head region is black and bears a distinctive white band across the rear. The Southeastern Crowned Snake is usually 8 to 10 inches in length. Similar species include: Ringneck Snake

 

Distribution and Status

The Southeastern Crowned Snake can be found in Floyd and Clark Counties. The species is listed as state Endangered.

 

Threats and Management Issues

Loss of habitat as a result of human development is thought to be a major threat facing the Southeastern Crowned Snake.

 

Ecology

The crowned snake typically prefers dry, rocky slopes. Its small size and secretive nature has allowed it to remain in close proximity to urban areas. This snake primarily eats insects and spiders.
