Identification

The Western Earth Snake is grayish brown to deep reddish brown with a pale, lighter dorsal stripe bordered by a few black flecks. The throat is grayish white in color and the belly is cream with a greenish tint. Earth snakes average 10 to 12 inches in length. Similar species include: Brown Snake, Redbelly Snake

 

Distribution and Status

The Western Earth Snake is most frequently found in southcentral Indiana and the Wabash River Valley. The species is considered uncommon in Indiana.

 

Ecology

This secretive species can be found under rocks along the edges of woodlands. Their diet most likely consists of earthworms and insect larvae.
